CSUB Professor Jianjun Wang Named Recipient of CSU Faculty Innovation and Leadership Award

Dr. Jianjun Wang, a professor of research design and statistics at California State University, Bakersfield has been named a recipient of the California State University’s Faculty Innovation & Leadership Award for his work in implementing innovative practices that significantly improve student success.  Dr. Wang, who has been a faculty member at CSUB since 1993, is one of 26 faculty members in the CSU system to receive the recognition.

“Knowing the fact that we have many worthy nominees at CSUB for this award, I am extremely honored and humbled by this recognition,” Dr. Wang noted.  “I am grateful to many colleagues for mentoring and supporting my professional growth across the fields of teaching, research, and service.  I am also thankful to our campus leadership for attaching great importance to offering quality and affordable higher education for our well-deserving students.”

“J.J. Wang is a highly regarded researcher in the area of statistical inquiry with respect to educational attainment and pedagogy,” said Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Jenny Zorn.  “His courses are known to be rigorous and challenging, resulting in highly successful students who are prepared for their careers.”

Dr. Wang has extensive experience in teaching research design and statistics courses in undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs at CSUB and other institutions and has an impressive record in face-to-face, hybrid, and online teaching.  His online courses include computing activities, lecture halls, PowerPoint presentations, recorded supplementary materials, and external videos that students, including those with special needs, can use with ease throughout their courses.

The online courseware was reviewed with a perfect score by an external Quality Matters team. He also has created an online statistical lab that allows students, including those from remote areas and traditionally underserved families, to produce computer printout from statistical software packages and gain greater access to quality and free learning materials in the professional field.

Funding for the CSU Faculty Innovation and Leadership awards is provided by generous grant support from the College Futures Foundation and the James Irvine Foundation, who see faculty innovation and leadership as vital to improving outcomes for California’s diverse students.

The systemwide award was not campus-based -- not all campuses had an awardee, and some campuses have two or three faculty members sharing the award.  A selection committee comprised of faculty, student representatives from the California State Student Association, and staff members from the CSU Chancellor’s Office reviewed 366 nominations to identify the inaugural Faculty Innovation and Leadership Award recipients.

“World-class CSU faculty are leading the charge as our university continues its remarkable progress in improving student learning and degree completion,” said CSU Chancellor Timothy P. White. “These exceptional recipients demonstrate leadership in their respective fields and incorporate cutting-edge techniques into curriculum. Their commitment to student success ensures that the value of a CSU degree continues to increase.”

As part of the recognition, Dr. Wang will receive a $5,000 cash award and $10,000 will be allocated to his academic department to support ongoing innovation and leadership to advance student success.

Dr. Wang’s leadership in his academic field is demonstrated by his prestigious research grant awards from the National Science Foundation, the Carnegie Foundation, the Spencer Foundation and the U.S. Department of Education.  Held in high esteem by his peers, Dr. Wang has been recognized as the recipient of the 2014-15 CSUB Faculty Scholarship and Creative Activity Award and a fellow of the National Center for Education Statistics.
