CSU Bakersfield To Host CSU Systemwide Institutional Review Board (IRB) Forum

The Office of Grants, Research and Sponsored Programs (GRaSP) and the Institutional Review Board (IRB) at California State University, Bakersfield will be hosting the 2018 CSU IRB Forum on Thursday, Sept. 13, and Friday, Sept. 14. The event will be held at the Student Union Multipurpose Room and will include IRB colleagues from all 23 CSU campuses, CSUB staff, faculty, students, and community professionals.

The forum, hosted for the first time by CSUB, is titled, “New Common Rule, New Growth!” Topics of discussion include the newly revised Federal Policy for the Protection of Human Subjects (‘Common Rule’) and its implementation, student research projects and IRB review, data security, international research projects and other relevant topics.

“We are proud to be able to host this important forum that will bring together CSU Institutional Review Board (IRB) personnel, CSUB faculty, staff, and the community,” said CSUB Research Ethics Review Coordinator Dr. Isabel Sumaya. “Because IRBs are governed by the Code of Federal Regulations as set forth by executive departments and agencies of the federal government, the protection of human subjects in research is one of the most important jobs that each CSU oversees.”

The conference will feature a webcast with guest speaker Misti Ault-Anderson from the U.S. Office of Human Research Protections (OHRP). Ault-Anderson, a senior advisor for public health education in the Division of Education and Development, has been a senior policy and research analyst at the Presidential Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues. She holds a master’s degree in biomedical science solicy and dvocacy from Georgetown University, a master’s degree in science education from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, and a bachelor’s degree in microbiology from Clemson University.

The event is open to the public. For anyone interested in human subjects protection in research, RSVP by visiting the CSUB GRaSP-IRB Event webpage: ex.htm.
