CSUB Website Offers Opportunity to Thank, Say Farewell to Outgoing President Horace Mitchell

California State University, Bakersfield has unveiled a new website https:www.csub.edu/thanksdrmitch/ -- to provide an opportunity for students, faculty, staff and the community to thank President Horace Mitchell for his 50 years of dedication and leadership in higher education and wish him well in his retirement. People may post to the Wall on the site by using #thanksdrmitch on Twitter and Instagram and #thanksdrmitch@csubakersfield on Facebook.

Dr. Mitchell became the fourth president of California State University, Bakersfield in July 2004. Under Dr. Mitchell’s leadership, the University has received national recognition with a vision to extend the excellence and diversity of the faculty and academic programs, enhance the quality of the student experience and strengthen community engagement.

Dr. Mitchell announced his retirement at University Day in August 2017, effective June 30, 2018. Dr. Mitchell and First Lady Barbara Mitchell will be honored at a Retirement and Scholarship Gala Saturday, June 9, at the Bakersfield Marriott at the Convention Center. Among Dr. Mitchell’s many accomplishments at CSUB are:

  • CSUB ranked third in the U.S. for the upward mobility of its students, meaning the University is lifting our students out of poverty into the middle-class and beyond.

  • Establishing academic programs such an engineering and agricultural business to meet the demands of the Kern County economy.

  • Opening new academic facilities such as Science III, Visual Arts Building and Humanities Office Building as well as new student housing.

  • Made a successful transition for Athletics to a Division I program. CSUB will join the Big West Conference in 2020.

  • Establishing an Ed.D. in Education Leadership, the University’s first independent doctoral program.

  • Receiving the prestigious Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching’s Community Engagement Classification for the University’s active participation in community engagement.

  • Receiving a designation for CSUB as the second-ever National Collegiate Affiliate for Keep America Beautiful.

  • CSUB named #10 of the Top 100 Masters Universities by Washington Monthly (2017), a Top University for Student Inclusion by The Wall Street Journal (2017) and #39 Top Colleges and Universities by TIME magazine (2014).
