CSUB Alumni Association Inspires Current Students with Rising Runner Awards Ceremony

Four accomplished California State University, Bakersfield alumni will be honored at the 2018 Rising Runner ceremony at noon Friday, Feb. 23, in the Stockdale Room on the CSUB campus as part of Homecoming Week activities.

The ceremony will honor outstanding alumni in various fields, ranging from social work and accounting to geology and development. It will include a question-and-answer session for current students to ask the Rising Runners about their career and the journey they took to get where they are today.

“The Alumni Rising Runner program recognizes the accomplishments of outstanding alumni and demonstrates to current students that post-graduate success isn’t too far out of reach. Our hope is that these four alumni leave with a deeper connection to their alma mater and that the students leave feeling inspired to follow their dreams,” said Sarah Hendrick, CSUB director of alumni engagement.

In its fourth year, the Rising Runner program recognizes CSUB alumni of the last 10 years who are excelling in their work and giving back to their community. In consultation with faculty, the dean from each of CSUB’s four academic schools selects a Rising Runner.

This year’s recipients are:

  • Derek Abbott, Class of 2010, vice president of community development and resource planning at Tejon Ranch;
  • Ryan Drakos, Classes of 2013 and 2016, accounting manager at Wonderful Pistachios & Almonds and a CSUB adjunct lecturer;
  • Kate O’Sullivan, Class of 2007, geologist and lecturer at CSUB; and
  • Michael Pawloski, Classes of 2007 and 2011, medical social worker at Hoffman Hospice.
