Quality of Life Center Speaker Series Kicks Off with Dr. Kyle Susa

The California State University, Bakersfield School of Social Sciences and Education (SSE) Quality of Life Center Speaker Series will host its first event of the spring semester from 6-7:15 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 29, in the Student Union Multipurpose Room.

CSU Bakersfield Assistant Professor of Psychology Dr. Kyle Susa will speak on “Wrongful Conviction and the Science of Eyewitness Memory.”

Sixty-three percent of juror eligible citizens in the United States believe memory works like a video recorder stopped, started and replayed with complete accurate detail. However, scientific research has shown that it’s reconstructive and prone to error. Mistaken eyewitness identifications are the leading contributing cause of known wrongful convictions in the United States. Out of the last 325 people exonerated, 72% were convicted, in part, due to mistaken eyewitness identifications.

Dr. Susa’s presentation will focus on cognitive processes behind eyewitness memory and how the science of it can help inform our criminal justice system.

Dr. Susa received his bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and his master’s and doctoral degrees (Ph.D.) in Experimental Psychology from the University of Texas at El Paso.

Prior to his time at CSUB, Dr. Susa held academic and federal government positions conducting research for the Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Secret Service. Now, Dr. Susa currently connects psychology with legal practices, with a primary focus on the social and cognitive influences of eyewitness memory error. His research has been featured in the Washington Post and Politico. He is also published in several psychology academic journals including, “Perspectives on Psychological Science,” “Visual Cognition” “Social Cognition” and “Psychonomic Bulletin and Review”.
