CSUB Alumni Holiday Mixer to Benefit Campus Food Pantry

The CSUB Alumni Holiday Mixer, the Alumni Association’s next signature event linking graduates to their university and its students, will celebrate the season and support the campus’ new food pantry.

The mixer will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 5, at The Padre Hotel’s Prairie Fire Lounge. Alumni and their friends are invited.

The association is asking attendees to bring a non-perishable food item for the CSUB Food Pantry, which opened in mid-September to address food-insecurity concerns.

As of Nov. 3, nearly 600 students had used the food pantry. In the first month, 42 percent of pantry customers had been there more than once.

Students and staff may visit the pantry once a week and collect food based on a points system. The pantry operates 27 hours a week with a coordinator, two paid graduate students, and some 30 student volunteers who as of early November logged 220 hours of service.

Some of the food is donated; some of is purchased from food banks in Bakersfield and Fresno.

Pantry donations of non-food items such as microwaveable bowls and cups, utensils and hygiene products are encouraged as well.
