CSUB to Hold E-Waste Drive as Part of Campus Sustainability Month

It’s Campus Sustainability Month at all CSU campuses, including California State University, Bakersfield! Through the month of October, special activities will celebrate the new smoke- and tobacco-free campus policy, as well as CSUB’s new Food Pantry.

Recently, CSUB held Rideshare Week, complete with a group bike ride, and an Outdoor Nation Campus Challenge with the Student Recreation Center (SRC).

On Saturday, Oct. 14, an E-Waste Drive and Paper Shredding event will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. off Southwest Rd. and Camino Media, near Hardt Field. The Kern County and CSUB campus communities can drop off paper and electronic waste, such as old computer monitors, TVs, DVDs, and so on.

“Alianza Recycling is excited to team up with Staff Forum and Metro Shredding in this community recycling event,” said Neil Agness, Business Development Manager of Alianza Recycling. “It is imperative to have recycling events like these to educate the public and future generations regarding proper recycling and keeping the toxins from the electronic devices out of our landfills and ultimately our drinking water.”

Other activities during Sustainability Month will include:

  • Wednesday, Oct. 18 - Movie Screening: “A Place at the Table,” and discussion led by Dr. Aaron Hegde in the Dezember Reading Room from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

  • Thursday, Oct. 19 – Brown Bag Discussion with Jessica Sutherland, founder of Homeless to Higher Ed, a nonprofit organization that aims to raise awareness about the barriers to higher education facing our nation’s poorest students. She will speak on her personal struggle with food and housing insecurity while pursuing higher education.

  • Saturday, Oct. 21 – Edible Garden Community Build Day on the Science III Lawn from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., where participants build garden planters.

Monday, Oct. 23 – The campus community Clean-Up day will wrap up the month, as everyone comes together to help keep campus beautiful. Five randomly selected participants will receive the exclusive Campus Sustainability Month giveaway.
