Something for Everyone at CSUB This Weekend

There is a little something for everyone at California State University, Bakersfield this weekend during one of the busiest weekends of the year on campus.

Highlighting the weekend will be Celebrate CSUB, the university’s open house for the community; the Bakersfield Jazz Festival; and the final round of the Bakersfield’s Got Talent competition.

Events on the CSUB campus this weekend include:


  • The 9th annual Gender Matters Interdisciplinary Student Research Symposium, highlighting women, gender, and sexuality studies, will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the CSUB Student Housing Multipurpose Room.
  • The 31st annual Bakersfield Jazz Festival, presented by Dignity Health-Mercy and Memorial Hospitals and Motor City Lexus of Bakersfield, will be held at the CSUB Amphitheatre.  Gates will open at 6 p.m.  More information:


  • Celebrate CSUB, a day filled with activities for attendees of all ages, provides an opportunity for the community, prospective students, and parents to experience what CSUB has to offer. Activities at the event include:
    • A 5K Fun Run at 8 a.m. in front of the Student Recreation Center. Race day registration at 7 a.m.
    • Orientation for incoming freshman and transfer students at 8:30 a.m. in the Icardo Center.
    • Booths and activities will officially begin at 9 a.m. in Runner Park, along with PG&E’s Roadrunner Science Day with educational components and demonstrations on the Science III Lawn.
    • A “Taste of Bakersfield” at lunchtime will feature Hunsaker Brothers’ Carnie Kettle, The Curbside Kitchen, Michaelangelo’s Wood-Fired Pizza, Moo Creamery, Mossman’s Catering, CSUB’s Black Graduates’ hot links, and Staff Forum’s tri-tip sandwiches.
    • Student organizations and clubs also will have various booths to answer questions and provide fun activities for all ages.
    • The final round of the Bakersfield’s Got Talent competition will begin at 11 a.m. at the Student Union patio area and will feature performances by the five finalists.
    • The Bakersfield Jazz Festival, featuring performances by the CSUB Jazz Collective and other award-winning performers, will be held at the CSUB Amphitheatre. Gates open at 1 p.m. with music beginning at 2 p.m.
    • More than 70 California State University Honors students will participate in the CSU Honors Conference from 8:15 a.m. to 4 p.m. The conference will open in the Student Union Multipurpose Room at 8:15 a.m. and close with the presentation of awards and remarks by CSUB President Horace Mitchell at 3:30 p.m. in the Student Union Multipurpose Room.  Students will make presentations throughout the day in the Dezember Leadership Center.


  • The University Honors Ceremony will celebrate more than 30 Honors students and initiate more than 60 students into Alpha Chi, CSUB’s Honors Society.  Speakers at the event include CSUB President Horace Mitchell; CSUB Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Jenny Zorn; and Dr. Jacquelyn Kegley, director of CSUB’s Helen Hawk Honors Program.  The event will be held from 5-6 p.m. in the Dore Theater.
