CSUB to Host Geology Seminar Series

California State University Bakersfield’s Department of Geological Sciences will hold a series of seminar talks in April and May to inform students and the community about research and other work being done by the department and other leaders in the field.

“Working with the community is a key part of the mission of the department,” said Dr. Dirk Baron, chair of the Department of Geological Sciences. “This seminar series will foster the dialog between CSUB faculty and students and the community. We are looking forward to welcoming community members to the campus for the seminar talks.”

Dr. Baron said the seminar series stimulates students to read critically, think logically, and communicate effectively by exposing them to the research done by the speakers. It also enhances the communication between the department and the local community.

Below is a complete list of the speakers to participate in the series:

Dr. Katie O’Sullivan, CSUB – Friday, April 7, Noon to 1 p.m., Science III Room 104 - “Crystal Stratigraphy of Planetary Basalts: Implications for Future Exploration of the Solar System.”

Dr. Fred W. Schroeder, Seismic Interpreter – Friday, April 21: Noon to 1 p.m., Science III Room 104 - “Hydrocarbon Play Elements from a Geological Point of View.”

Dr. Corey Mathis, CSUB – Friday, April 21:  Noon to 1 p.m., Science III Room 104 – “Middle School Student’s Use of Evidence-Based Reasoning During Engineering Discussions.”

Dr. Prosper Torsu, CSUB – Friday, April 28: Noon to 1 p.m., Science III Room 104 – “A Replacement for Monte Carlo Methods in Reservoir Simulation: An Application to Optimization of Wellbore Placement.”

Dr. Lyndsay Ball, USGS – Tuesday, May 2: 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., Science III Room 104 – Topic TBA.

Dr. Richard Heermace, CSU Northridge/CSU COAST Seminar – Friday, May 5: Noon to 1 p.m., Science III Room 104 – “Slip Rates along the San Andrea Fault in the San Gorgonio Pass, Southern California, and implications for large earthquakes”
