CSUB 2017 Student Research Competition Winners Announced

The California State University, Bakersfield Office of Grants, Research and Sponsored Programs (GRaSP) has announced the winners of the 18th Annual Student Research Competition, which showcases research and creative activities in all disciplines.

Undergraduate or graduate students currently enrolled at CSUB, as well as alumni/alumnae who received their degrees in spring, summer or fall 2016, were eligible to participate.

“With more than 30 students presenting from a variety of academic disciplines, this year’s Student Research Competition was a tremendous success in highlighting CSUB’s brightest minds,” said Director of Sponsored Programs Development, Vincent Oragwam.

Winners were announced in four categories: Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Engineering and Computer Sciences, Behavioral and Social Science, and Biological Sciences.

Students’ presentations were judged on the clarity of purpose, appropriateness of methodology, interpretation of results, ability of the presenter to articulate the research or creative activity organization of the material presented, presenter’s ability to handle questions from the jury and general audience, and the value of the research or creative activity.

The winners are:

Physical and Mathematical Sciences:




1st Place – Andrew Hudson (Kinesiology)

2nd Place – Erik Ostlund (Physics)




1st Place – Rosetta Lottie (Masters in Health Administration)


Engineering and Computer Sciences:




1st Place – Alex Rinaldi (Computer Science)

2nd Place – Korey Cain (Electrical Engineering)


Behavioral and Social Science:




1st Place – Nasseem Alshaif (Psychology and Religious Studies)




Matthew L. McClellan (Masters in Public Administration)


Biological and Agricultural Sciences:




1st Place – Jaycie Fickle (Biology)

2nd Place – Kathrn Johnston (Biochemistry)




Mitchell Coleman (Biology)


Winners of the Student Research Competition will represent CSUB at the 31st Annual Statewide Student Research Competition at Cal Poly State University, San Luis Obispo.
