Registration for CSUB Fab Fest Is Now Open

Calling all inventors, tinkerers and crafters: Registration for the CSUB Fab Fest is now open! The School of Natural Sciences, Mathematics, and Engineering (NSME) is hosting the 2017 Fab Fest on Saturday, March 25, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Science III lawn at California State University, Bakersfield. Fab Fest is looking for wood workers, metal workers, knitters, crafters, artists and those who “make” just about anything else.
This event will be a family affair with activities for all ages. Some of the activities, such as building a crash cart, make-your-own rock candy kits, and hands-on, interactive displays for children, will be hosted by CSUB student clubs. North of the River (NOR) Robots for Tots will also have activities geared toward three- to five-year-old children.
The Kinetic Sculpture Competition will take place during the morning hours and is open to anyone in the community interested in participating. The competition will allow teams of individuals to compete based on the human-powered vehicle they design and create. Participants are encouraged to be creative and promote sustainability by using refurbished materials.
CSUB Engineering students will be available to assist with design ideas. Competition categories will include Most Creative, Fastest, and Most Innovative, among others. During the competition, activities and exhibits will still be open to those interested in wandering and exploring.
“NSME is very excited to host another event that gives tinkerers, inventors, hobbyists, makers, and crafters the opportunity to bring their creations out of the garage, work room, or home and on display for the public to see,” said Andrea L. Medina, NSME Director of Grants and Outreach. “Last year, we had such a wide variety of exhibitors, including an artist who repurposes plumbing parts to make lamps, a Chinese calligraphy artist, and an engineering student who invented an irrigation system. Fab Fest gives the community the chance to interact with makers and learn about the maker movement. We’ll have a variety of activities and events throughout the day that will engage all ages.”
While this isn’t the space of a typical craft fair, where people have the opportunity to sell items, it is a chance to showcase inventions, crafts, hobbies and more. This will allow the community to interact with the others to learn about their crafts and/or hobbies. CSUB Fab Fest is a day to encourage the do-it-yourself maker movement.
This event is made possible through its sponsors, Chevron and Edison International, and partners American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) Student Branch at CSUB and NOR Robots for Tots.
