Angappa Gunasekaran Appointed CSUB Dean of the School of Business and Public Administration (BPA)


After a national search, California State University, Bakersfield today announced the appointment of Angappa Gunasekaran as Dean of the School of Business and Public Administration (BPA).  He will begin his duties at CSU Bakersfield on July 1, 2017.

Gunasekaran has served as Dean of the Charlton College of Business at the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth since January 1, 2013. Prior to his role as Dean of the Charlton College of Business, he served as the Interim Dean of the Charlton College of Business.

“It is a great honor to serve under the visionary leadership of President Horace Mitchell and Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Jenny Zorn,” Gunasekaran said.  “The School of Business and Public Administration has a comprehensive curriculum, outstanding faculty and staff, a committed and strong student body, a supportive administration, engaged alumni, and a welcoming Kern community.”

As Dean of CSUB’s BPA, Gunasekaran will serve as the School’s chief academic and administrative officer and will report directly to the Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs. Gunasekaran will work with important constituencies, including business, government and alumni, to build relationships and develop funding, both public and private. Gunasekaran also will help create fiscal management procedures and strategic plans. He will be dedicated to producing graduates that are needed and desired in the business, public administration and economic communities.

During his time as Dean of the Charlton College of Business, Gunasekaran provided administrative and academic leadership for advancing the instructional and research programs of the college; strategic planning and prioritizing of college goals; the development of college policies and procedures; curriculum innovation; student access and success; the recruitment and professional development of faculty and staff; represented the college in inter-college matters affecting teaching, research and service missions of the college; Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) accreditation – a gold standard for assuring quality business education, internationalization, fundraising, community engagement and regional economic development.

Gunasekaran has been a Professor of Operations Management at UMass Dartmouth since 1998. Over the years, he also has held academic positions in the U.K., Australia, Finland, India and Canada. He served as Chairperson of the Department of Decision and Information Sciences at UMass Dartmouth from 2006 to 2012. Dr. Gunasekaran has published more than 300 articles in peer-reviewed journals, presented about 60 papers, published 60 articles in conferences and given a number of invited talks in many countries. He is on the editorial board of several journals and has organized several international workshops and conferences in the emerging areas of operations management and information systems. He has been a visiting professor at several international universities and received many research grants. Dr. Gunasekaran also is the founding Director of the Business Innovation Research Center (BIRC) at UMass Dartmouth.

Gunasekaran holds a Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering & Operations Research from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay; a Master’s degree in Industrial Engineering from PSG College of Technology, University of Madras, India; and a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Government College of Technology, University of Madras, India.
