'Breaking Bad' Star Comes to CSUB to Celebrate Disability Awareness Month

Co-Star of AMC’s “Breaking Bad,” RJ Mitte, is coming to California State University, Bakersfield (CSUB) in celebration of Disability Awareness Month, presented by CSUB’s Division of Student Affairs, on Monday, October 24 in the Doré Theatre at 6 p.m.

Mitte, 24, played Walt Jr., the son of cancer-stricken science teacher-turned-drug manufacturer, Walter White. Like his character on the show, Mitte has cerebral palsy, although a milder form of the disability. At three-years-old, Louisiana native, Mitte was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy, but it never deterred his drive to succeed in television and film. After moving to Los Angeles, due to his sister’s chance encounter with a casting director, Mitte landed roles in various shows, such as Showtime’s Weeds, NBC’s Vegas, and the CW’s Everybody Hates Chris, before getting his breakout role on Breaking Bad.

Aside from acting, Mitte is also an activist for equality and diversity. Mitte serves as the official Ambassador for the United Cerebral Palsy and Shriners Hospitals for Children and is the celebrity face for the #CutTheBull campaign launched in October 2014, in support of children with disabilities. He is involved with SAG-AFTRA as a member of the union’s Performers with Disabilities Committee. Currently, he is working with PACER’s National Center for Bullying Prevention on a nationwide campaign designed to educate those who see bullying, leveraging peer-to-peer support.

Mitte is an inspirational speaker, who visits high schools, college and universities around the country, speaking about overcoming obstacles, including being bullied, and how he has set and achieved his goals.

This event will include a Q&A, followed by a meet-and-greet with Mitte. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Free parking is available in Lots A, B and C. This event is sponsored by: Services for Students with Disabilities, Club ANCHOR, the Counseling Center and ASI.
