CSUB Celebrates Native American Culture with Tejon Indian Tribe Pow Wow

The second annual Tejon Indian Tribe Pow Wow will take place on the California State University, Bakersfield (CSUB) campus on Saturday, September 24 and Sunday, September 25 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Alumni Park.

The free, two-day event is open to the community and will offer an opportunity to share in the rich practices of the Native American culture. The Tejon Tribe will also provide fine drumming and various styles of dancing over the last weekend in September, which the state designated as California Native American Days.

A blessing of the grounds and spiritual preparation of the arena through Gourd dancing will start the event at 11 am on Saturday. Guests can enjoy food and craft vendors, community resources and a race car display. The event grand opening will begin at noon where all dancers will enter the arena in their regalia representing various Tribes and dance styles, followed by a dance competition. At the close of the event, Aztec dancers will perform for the community and a complimentary dinner will be provided.

The festivities will continue on Sunday with Gourd dancing, vendor displays, dance competitions and a dance award ceremony. A variety of other events will also take place throughout the dance competitions, including calls to different Tribes for dances of prayer. Guests will have the ability to view the events from a designated spectator area and are encouraged to bring lawn chairs for the weekend-long celebration.

CSU Bakersfield is proud to host the Tejon Indian Tribe Pow Wow on campus for the second year. California State University campuses across the state are celebrating California Native Americans.
