Guerreros Americanos Film and Discussion to Take Place in Walter W. Stiern Library

Guerreros Americanos: The Valley at War,” a discussion and film event focusing on Hispanic participation in American conflicts since World War II, will take place on Saturday, May 28 at 3 p.m. in the California State University, Bakersfield (CSUB) Library’s Dezember Reading Room.

“While we are celebrating the courage and sacrifice of all our veterans, our program is exploring the sometimes overlooked role that soldiers and sailors of Hispanic heritage have played in the defense of our nation,” said Curt Asher, Dean of the Walter Stiern Library and a Navy veteran.

The event will begin with the film, “War and Peace” which is part of the Latino Americans series from PBS. Panelists include local historian and veteran of the Bosnia conflict, F. Javier Llamas and Wesley Barrientos, a veteran who lost both legs in the Iraq war and a director of the local Wounded Heroes Fund; Duane Goff, Vietnam Veteran and past commander of the Kern County Chapter of the American GI Forum; Bert Marquez Korean War Veteran; and an unnamed special guest.

“Guerreros Americanos” is part of the Walter Presents event series held by the CSUB Library and is a collaboration with Bakersfield College’s Social Justice Institute. The event is co-sponsored by the American Library Association and National Endowment for the Humanities.

“We are looking forward to bringing members of the veteran community to campus. This is an important event and gives us the chance to discuss some of the experiences of our local vets,” Llamas said.

Light refreshments will be served and parking is available for off-campus guests.This event is free and open to the public.
