CSUB to Host Ally Rally for LGBT Students, Faculty, Staff and Community
May 20, 2016
California State University, Bakersfield (CSUB) will host “Ally Rally,” a panel discussion on the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community, on Monday, May 23 at 6 p.m. in the Student Union, Multipurpose Room.
“The goal of the Ally Rally is to debunk myths about people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, pansexual, or asexual, or who don’t fit into strict gender roles. This information is particularly relevant in light of recent restroom laws and crimes against those who are considered ‘different,’” said Professor of Psychology, Anne Duran, founder of the Ally Rally.
The community is welcome to attend the panel discussion featuring: Dr. Michael Harville, Licensed Clinical Psychologist, CSUB Counseling Center; Whitney Weddell, Bakersfield LGBTQ; Ike Duran of Federation of Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays, Inc. (PFLAG); Liora Gubkin-Malicdem, Director of the CSUB Institute for Religion, Education, and Public Policy, and Unitarian Universalist Ministerial Candidate; Emily Poole, Associate Director of Campus Programming; and two CSUB students.
“This collaborative event is important for Kern County because it brings together local LGBT resources and supporters. It also provides a valuable educational forum for students and community members,” said Yvonne Ortiz-Bush, Assistant Professor of Advanced Educational Studies Department. “Negative attitudes are often driven by misunderstandings and/or lack of knowledge about the target group. This is a safe place to hear answers to questions that many people have, but often are too afraid to ask.”
Refreshments will be provided. Parking is free in Lot M (intersection of Don Hart East and Kroll). Questions may be directed to Dr. Yvonne Ortiz-Bush at (661) 654-3087 or yortiz_bush@csub.edu.
