Alumni Council Appoints John Nilon of Bakersfield to CSU Board of Trustees

John Nilon, the Kern County Administrative Officer who earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from California State University, Bakersfield, has been appointed to the CSU Board of Trustees as the Alumni Trustee. His two‐year appointment starts in July.

Elected by volunteer members of the CSU Alumni Council, Nilon will represent the interests of CSU alumni on the 25‐member board and keep alumni leaders informed of important issues affecting the 23‐ campus system.

Since his graduation from CSUB in 1979, Nilon has served in various volunteer capacities for his alma mater and the CSU for nearly 38 years, including membership and leadership positions on the boards of directors for the CSU Alumni Council, the CSUB Alumni Association and the CSUB Foundation.

In addition to his current duties as Kern County’s Chief Administrative Officer, Nilon serves on the board of Network for Children, and previously held positions as director of the Community Foundation of Kern County, education chair of the Governor’s Central Valley Economic Development Summit and membership in the Red Cross, Epilepsy Society, FEMA advisory committee, Junior Achievement, Kern Health Services and others.

Among his awards include the highest honor bestowed annually by the American Society of Public Administration for his public service and the Alfred Harrell Man of the Year Award from the Volunteer Association of Kern County.

“John Nilon’s long‐standing tenure in Kern County and his 38 years of support for his alma mater, CSUB, have qualified and prepared him for this important post,” said Dia S. Poole, president of the CSU Alumni Council. “His culmination of community service, service to the university and experience working with legislators, corporate leaders and leaders in the academic community make him ideally suited to his new role as Alumni Trustee.”

John’s family is a product of the CSU ‐ his wife, Lourdes, is a 2008 and 2009 graduate of CSU Bakersfield. His daughter, Jacquelyn, graduated from San Francisco State University in 2012 and 2014 and his son, Thomas, is a 2015 graduate of CSU Channel Islands. His youngest son, Ethan, is 14.

The Board of Trustees is responsible for the governance of the 23‐campus system. Under present law there are 25 trustees (24 voting, one non‐voting). Five trustees are ex‐officio members: The California Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Assembly Speaker, State Superintendent of Public Instruction and the Chancellor. The Alumni Trustee is the only trustee appointed to the CSU Board without review by the Governor or legislature.

No trustee, with the exception of the Chancellor and the Faculty Trustee, receives any salary for his or her service on the board.
