19th Annual Theta Sigma Chi Latina Youth Conference

The 19th Annual Theta Sigma Chi Latina Youth Conference, entitled “She Believed She Could, So She Did” will be held on April 8 at the Doré Theatre on California State University, Bakersfield’s (CSUB) campus from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. High school girls in Kern County will learn from Latina professionals, participate in seminars and explore options for higher education at the conference.

Dr. Yamileth Fisher, a senior psychologist specialist with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR), is scheduled to speak. She is established in the field of mental health with a Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology and an M.A. in Marriage and Family Therapy. Additionally, Dr. Fisher has received extensive training in the practice of hypnotherapy. During the early course of her education, Dr. Fisher also served as a supply specialist with the United States Army. Originally from Nicaragua, her bilingual abilities and multicultural familiarity enabled her to work successfully in a culturally diverse area such as the Central Valley. While she has worked with CDCR full-time for seven years, Dr. Fisher also maintains a private practice in the community and works as a consultant. Dr. Fisher is active in her community, volunteering her time to speak with youth and Latinas. Additionally, she had the recent opportunity to broaden her spiritual and humanitarian outreach on religious visits to Cuba, immersing herself in the culture. Provost Jenny Zorn will welcome conference participants.

Theta Sigma Chi is a non-profit Latina organization which was established in 1993 at CSUB. The organization’s goal is to empower Latinas to be successful leaders by promoting higher education, cultural awareness and unity not only at CSUB, but throughout Kern County.

Participants are asked to donate $8 to cover lunch and conference materials. For more information regarding Theta Sigma Chi, please contact Maria E. Delgado, M.A., Founding Mother and Community Advisor, at (956) 572-4092 or
