Sensational Sophomores Opt For A Different Kind of Spring Break

While many college students might be going out of town or hanging out with friends during spring break, California State University, Bakersfield’s (CSUB) Sensational Sophomore students and Campus Programming will be partnering with local Kern County Housing Authority to make a difference in their community. During the week of March 21-25, students will be working at Adelante Vista Community Center (1104 South Robinson Street) to improve two of their buildings, as part of their Alternative Spring Break.

Twenty-five students will spend their time during spring break cleaning, painting and decorating the two community centers through a national program known as Alternative Spring Break.

“Alternative Spring Break is an opportunity for CSUB Sensational Sophomores to go out into their community and engage in volunteer service,” said Alejandra “Olly” Lopez, president of Sensational Sophomore Leadership Organization. “This is a great experience for our students in that we are using our spring break to help create welcoming environments for our local community centers and make an impact in our city.”

The Housing Authority, where the Sensational Sophomores will be working is an independent, local government agency providing safe, affordable housing to thousands of Kern County residents. Through special programs, they are able to serve families, individuals, senior citizens, Veterans, disabled, homeless, farm workers and emancipated foster youth. The Housing Authority houses over 15,000 low income Kern County residents and partners with other local agencies to help residents become self-sufficient.

This is the group’s first year participating in the Alternative Spring Break program. The Sensational Sophomores of CSUB are also seeking local donations for cleaning, painting and decorating supplies, along with food and drink donations. Those interested in donating can contact Emily Poole, Associate Director of Campus Programming at (661) 654-2711.
