CSUB Hosts Extra Life Campus Gamers Fundraiser

California State University, Bakersfield (CSUB) will host its annual Campus Gamers’ “Extra Life” game-a-thon from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 7 in the CSUB Student Union.

Campus Gamers hosts the 12-hour gaming fundraiser each fall to benefit the Lauren Small Children’s Medical Center at Bakersfield Memorial Hospital, a Children’s Miracle Network hospital. Club members bring in over 1,000 video, board, card, and tabletop games for the event and game companies donate thousands of dollars in prizes to encourage giving. CSUB’s Extra Life group event is one of the largest in the United States and is sponsored by the Campus Gamers Student Organization at CSUB and Associated Students, Inc.

The event has grown phenomenally from 80 participants and $4,300 raised in 2012 to 400 participants and $21,000 in 2014, ranking Team CSUB #20 out of 6,200 Extra Life teams in North America last year. The hospital named CSUB its Corporate Partner of the Year in 2012 and CSUB Gamers was the Outstanding Club of the Year in the 2011 and 2012 academic years. So far in 2015, Campus Gamers has raised $10,000 and has 830 registrants for the Extra Life event. Registration is free, but participants are required to raise or donate at least $20 to gain entry into the event.

Campus Gamers promotes student engagement, co-curricular activities, community service, and interest in the games industry. Meetings are open to all CSUB students, faculty, staff, administration and alumni, and generally consist of one hour of business followed by two hours of gameplay. Special events include Gamer Education Day, Extra Life, Scary Rec Carnival, Celebrate CSUB, club fairs, game days at the library, Bakersfield Comic-Con, BakAnime, and midnight game launch events.

In the spring, the club’s Gamer Education Day brings members of the games industry to CSUB to talk to students about game creation and the industry.
