CSU Bakersfield to Celebrate Disability Awareness Month

California State University, Bakersfield’s (CSUB) Services for Students with Disabilities will host an educational event to celebrate National Disability Awareness Month on Thursday, October 15, 2015 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on the Student Union Patio.

Community partners including the California Department of Rehabilitation, Kern County Mental Health, Independent Living Center, and Junior Blind of America will host informational booths. On-campus partners such as the Student Health Center, Counseling Center, Associated Student, Inc. (ASI), and Club Anchor also will be available. Special guests will include Vice President for Student Affairs, Dr. Thomas Wallace.

The mission of Services for Students with Disabilities is to provide support services which will enable every student, regardless of disability, to have access to a university education. The event’s goal is to raise awareness about all disabilities while promoting inclusion on campus and in the community. The Davidson Program for Independence, which is part of Junior Blind for America, will provide experiential opportunities, such as a simulation of different degrees of blindness. There even will be an opportunity to experience what it is like to navigate the halls of the Student Union in a wheelchair or walk with a cane. A variety of information also will be available regarding services in the community and potential career opportunities for those interested in working with individuals with disabilities.

Not only is this event held in celebration of Disability Awareness Month, but it also is in celebration of the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The Act was granted by Congress in 1990 and signed into law later in the year. The civil rights law prohibits workforce discrimination based on disability and also provides for reasonable accommodations to employees with disabilities.
