Wells Fargo gives CSUB $20k to fund scholarships for first-generation students

California State University, Bakersfield, received a grant for $20,000 from Wells Fargo. Vice President for Community Development Gabriela Mello and VP of the Kern County District Ricardo Villarreal presented the check Wednesday to CSUB staff members.

The funds awarded by Wells Fargo will be used to award five $4,000 scholarships to first-generation college students who demonstrate a financial need.

“Investing in the futures of these bright young men and women is the best way Wells Fargo can give back to our community,” Villarreal said. “Our hope is that these scholarships help ease the financial burden on these first-generation college students and that it helps place them on the path toward achieving the American dream.”

Financial assistance plays a key role in opening the door to higher education for many CSUB students. During the 2012-13 academic school year, 88 percent of 8,600 CSUB-enrolled students received financial aid and 68 percent qualified as low-income. Seventy-five percent of CSUB students are among the first in their families to attend college.
