CSUB Hosts Celebration Event Honoring 75th Anniversary of “The Grapes of Wrath”

The School of Arts and Humanities and The Public History Institute at CSU Bakersfield invite you to the official kick-off for the yearlong celebration honoring the 75th anniversary of John Steinbeck’s novel “The Grapes of Wrath” on February 7, 2014 at the Fox Theatre. The gala event will feature a concert by country music artist Dave Alvin, followed by a screening of the classic 1939 film “The Grapes of Wrath” directed by John Ford, and starring Henry Fonda.

The gala’s festivities will open with a VIP pre-party from 5:30 – 6:45 p.m. at the Hayden Building on 19th street with food, drinks, and meet-and-greet with Alvin. The pre-party will also include an auction with exclusive items, including a guitar signed by Alvin with all proceeds benefitting CSUB and The Ronald McDonald house. Guests will then move one block north to the Fox Theatre for the hour-long concert by Alvin at 7 p.m. The screening of the “The Grapes of Wrath” will begin at 8:15 p.m.

Throughout 2014, CSUB will feature a variety of events to commemorate the Dust Bowl Era Migration and the inspiring novel that illustrated a bygone era of our local history. Those who attend will not only enjoy the festivities, but will help support CSUB’s efforts to procure and make available to the public historical memorabilia preserving “The Grapes of Wrath.”

“The Grapes of Wrath depicts a lot of hardships that are still seen in today’s society, especially in the central valley,” said Dr. Richard Collins, Dean of the CSUB School of Arts and Humanities.  “I invite everyone to come out not to celebrate the hardships, but to celebrate the art, the history, and the memories, and to commemorate and say, let’s not forget.  It’s a sense that we have been somewhere and that we still have somewhere to go, things to achieve.”

Tickets for the event are $75 for VIP pre-party and concert; general concert admission is $30, and $20 for students/ seniors. Admission to the screening is free and will be based on number of seats available after event tickets have been sold. Tickets go on sale Jan. 9 and are available at all Vallitix locations and at
