Artists announced for 2013-2014 CSUB Guitar Arts Concert Series

The California State University, Bakersfield Department of Music is pleased to announce the artists for the 2013-2014 Guitar Arts Concert Series. This series will feature four professional guitar programs during the academic year in service to the CSUB student and faculty population, and the vast community of Bakersfield music enthusiasts.

The first concert of the Guitar Arts Series will feature Isaac Bustos, a Texas based young lion of the guitar.  A winner of numerous competitions in the US, Bustos is known for his sensitive interpretation of Scarlatti, Bach, and others.  He will be performing in the CSUB Music Building, room 127 on October 18, 2013 at 7:30 PM.

The second concert of the series is the evening set of command performances from our third annual Guitar Day.  This day of outreach and guitar camaraderie is open to anyone in the community and begins at 10 AM on Saturday, January 25, 2014.  The evening concert will feature Los Angeles based LeChic Duo.  This group consists of Iren Arutyunyan and Sofia Gleeson - both graduates of the University of Southern California - who collectively are in the process of taking the classical guitar world by storm. Their recital will headline the evening concert in the CSUB Doré Theatre at 6:00 PM.

Top U.S. player and scholar Paul Bowman will be the headliner of the third concert of the series.  Bowman is a well-respected champion of the modern literature and a well-schooled presenter of Baroque music.  He will perform Bach, Berio and present a world premiere by composer William Neil.  This special event will take place in the CSUB Music Building, room 127 on Friday, February 21, 2014 at 7:30 PM.

The final concert in the CSUB Guitar Arts Series will feature Rovshan Mamedkuliev, the 2012 winner of the Guitar Foundation of America (GFA) International Concert Artist Competition.   This Russian virtuoso has already wowed audiences around the world and now will visit Bakersfield as part of his GFA tour.  His performance will take place on Thursday April 3 at 7:30 PM in the CSUB Doré Theatre.

These programs reflect the emergence of the guitar curriculum over the past three years in the CSUB Music Department, which has focused on new standards and consistency in classical guitar studies, as well as augmented their curriculum by presenting examples of this timely art in twelve stellar events to sold-out houses on the CSUB campus.
