CSUB Announces New Dean of School of NSME

Anne HoutmanCalifornia State University Bakersfield is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Anne Houtman as the new Dean of the School of Natural Sciences, Mathematics, and Engineering effective July 1, 2013. She will succeed Dr. Julio Blanco who has served as dean since 2006. Dr. Blanco has been appointed Interim Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at CSU Monterey Bay effective July 1, 2013.

Dr. Houtman brings over 25 years of higher education experience to the position. Since 2011, she has served as Head and Professor at the Gosnell School of Life Sciences at Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, New York, where she was instrumental in obtaining a $5 million gift for the school. Between 2003-2011, she served as the Director of Biology’s General Education Program and an Associate Professor of Biology at California State University, Fullerton. For over 20 years, she has been an active participant in the national dialogue on science education, emphasizing the need to expand access and opportunity. She also served as the Program Coordinator for the Pew Midstates Science and Math Consortium which provided faculty development workshops and conferences on research, pedagogy, and career advancement across 13 colleges and universities. Since 2006, she has served on the College Board’s Science Academic Advisory Board

Dr. Houtman has received national and regional grants and has multiple peer-reviewed publications and presentations related to her research interests on the behavioral ecology of birds. She serves as a reviewer for several scholarly publications including the American Zoologist, Animal Behavior, Behavioral Ecology, the Canadian Journal of Zoology Proceedings of the Royal Society. Dr. Houtman holds a B.A. in Anthropology from Pomona College, an M.A. in Anthropology from the University of California, Los Angeles, and Ph.D. in Zoology from the University of Oxford.
