Welcome to the Department of Mathematics at CSUB!

We are a part of the  School of Natural Sciences, Mathematics, and Engineering, and we are located in the Science-III building on the CSUB campus.

Our Department consists of faculty members who engage in original research in areas of applied mathematics, computer science, mathematics education, pure mathematics, statistics, and other areas; several are involved in interdisciplinary collaboration. Students frequently pursue directed research alongside faculty.  The faculty have been supported in their research by the National Science Foundation,  the Department of Education, and other organizations, in addition to internal grants.  In addition, our faculty also engages in interdisciplinary and outreach activities within Kern County, and faculty members in the department are recipients of 3 outstanding professor awards, 2 faculty research awards, and 1 leadership and service award, all university-wide. They serve in numerous agencies at every level from local to international.

The Department of Mathematics offers academic programs designed to prepare students to become applied and pure mathematicians, statisticians, and teachers who are equipped with the analytical and computational skills necessary to compete and serve in today's technological society.   We offer programs of undergraduate study leading to the degrees of Bachelor of Science in Mathematics with 5 possible concentrations, in addition to minors in mathematics and applied statistics. The four concentrations for the bachelor's degree are applied mathematics, statistics, theoretical mathematics, and teaching mathematics, normal or blended. The Mathematics Department provides courses that will assist students from other disciplines and professional programs in developing the quantitative skills necessary for success in their chosen field.  We also offer a Master of Arts degree in Teaching Mathematics for working mathematics teachers.

Upon completion of our major, students are prepared to pursue careers in teaching or industry and are ready for graduate study leading to advanced degrees.  CSUB mathematics majors have gone on to graduate programs such as UC Santa Cruz, UC Davis, Iowa State University, and the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, to name the latest, and have been recipients of  numerous distinctions in undergraduate research.
