Cost of Attendance Budgets

Your eligibility for financial aid is based on your estimated financial need, which is calculated using a simple formula:

Cost of Attendance (COA)
Expected Family Contribution (EFC)
= Financial Need

It is important to note that a student is not required to have financial need to be eligible to receive unsubsidized Federal Stafford Loans, PLUS loans, or merit-based scholarships.

The Cost of Attendance (COA) is a figure calculated annually by financial aid offices that represents an estimate of the total cost (including tuition, fees, books & supplies, room & board, transportation, and misc. personal expenses) for a full-time student to attend their university during the academic year.
Based on a formula approved by Congress, the U.S. Department of Education uses the information you reported on the FAFSA to calculate your Expected Family Contribution (EFC). This number appears on your Student Aid Report (SAR) and represents the amount the student and his or her family are expected to contribute to the Cost of Attendance (COA).
Your COA and EFC are key factors to determine your financial aid eligibility. However, many factors determine financial aid eligibility. Sometimes a student pays more than their EFC, and sometimes they may pay less. Special circumstances may also affect the amount of financial aid you receive.
