What is the Early Start Program?

The Early Start Program serves CSU admitted freshmen who have assessed below the college readiness level for Written Communication (English) or Quantitative Reasoning (Math-based courses). This program will allow students to get two required courses done ahead of their first Fall semester.


Who has to take the Early Start Program?

Students with placement status of Ready w/Support *Early Start Program Required are required to participate in the Early Start Program, as determined by the Early Assessment Program, College Board SAT®, ACT® Test, and multiple measures.


How can students be exempt from Early Start?

International Students and Out of State Students are exempt from Early Start.


Who is eligible for the Early Start Program?

Only first-time incoming freshmen are eligible to enroll in the Early Start Program.


Is the program mandatory?

Yes, for all students with placement status of Ready w/Support *Early Start Program Required.


How do students enroll for the program at CSUB?


Early Start registration is a two-step process. Students first have to login to their MyCSUB account to access the Early Start Smart Page and select the campus where they plan to complete Early Start. Once students complete step one it will take approximately 24 hours for the system to generate the Enroll in Early Start link. During the second step the students register for the early start sessions, including dates and times.

What is the registration deadline for Early Start?

The Friday before the session in which you are enrolled is the deadline to register and make payment. 


What materials are required for the program?

English: writing utensil, notebook
Mathematics: writing utensil, notebook, calculator, earphones/headphones


What if students are eligible for financial aid?

Students who have applied for financial aid and have an Estimated Family Contribution of $6000 or less may be eligible for a fee waiver.

How do students know if they are eligible for a fee waiver?

Fee waiver eligibility can be accessed on the students Smart Page on their MyCSUB account. Students will also receive a pop-up notification indicating eligibility while registering. The fee waiver will automatically apply if students are eligible; students are not required to submit verification. If students believe they should be eligible or have further questions regarding their financial aid award they should contact the Financial Aid Office at 661-654-3016.

When is payment due?

Payment is due the Friday before the class begins. The fee waiver will automatically apply for students that are eligible if their FAFSA is complete, students are not required to complete or submit verification. If students are not eligible for the fee waiver they must submit payment for class fees by the first day of class. If students do not submit payment by the deadline they will be dropped for nonpayment. If students believe they should be eligible for a waiver and their account indicates that they are not, they should contact the Financial Aid Office at their home campus prior to completing their enrollment.


How do students pay for the Early Start classes if they are not eligible for the fee waiver?

Students can pay online through their myCSUB with a VISA, Mastercard, Discover, or American Express (2.75% fee will apply for all credit card transactions) or complete an electronic charge via check.


What happens if students do not submit payment by the due date?

Students will automatically be dropped from their classes.


What happens after students complete the Early Start Program?

Students met the Early Start Program requirement and they will be registered in the appropriate Fall courses based on their results.
