Math Placement Status

CSUB considers multiple assessments to determine what Math course a student will take in the Fall. Based on academic achievement, the appropriate Category will determine a student's next steps.

FULFILLED (All Majors)


  • A score of 3 or above on the College Board AP Calculus AB or Calculus BC test
  • A score of 3 or above on the College Board AP Statistics test
  • A score of 4 or above on the International Baccalaureate (IB) mathematics HL test
  • Completion of a college course (grade "C-" or better) that satis­fies the CSU General Education mathematics/Quantitative Reasoning requirement

High School Courses and Grade Point Average

  • 9th-11th High School Math GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 AND 12th grade Math course with Algebra II as a pre-requisite OR 5 or more years of Math
  • 10th-11th High School GPA greater than or equal to 3.7
  • 10th-11th High School GPA greater than or equal to 3.5 AND 4 or more years of Math
  • 9th-11th High School Math GPA greater than or equal to 3.5 AND 12th grade Math course with Algebra II as a pre-requisite OR 5 or more years of Math
  • 10th-11th High School GPA greater than or equal to 3.7

CSU Early Assessment Program (EAP), taken in conjunction with the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) in Math

  • A result of "Standard Exceeded"
  • A result of "Standard Met" AND 12th grade math course**
  • A result of "Standard Exceeded"

New SAT-College Board SAT® Test Math Section

  • A score of 570 or above
  • A score between 520-560 AND 12th grade math course**
  • A score of 570 or above

  • A score of 550 or above 
  • A score between 490-540 AND 12th grade math course**

** CSU approved 12th grade math course that requires Algebra II as a prerequisite with grade of 'C-' or higher.
