Program Description
Due to circumstances as a result of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Early Start classes will not be held at California State University, Bakersfield in the Summer 2020 semester. Incoming students for the Fall 2020 semester will not be required to complete the Early Start requirement.
The Early Start Program serves CSU admitted freshmen who have not demonstrated proficiency in math and/or English. Early Start Program participation is required for students needing skills development, as determined by the Early Assessment Program, College Board SAT®, ACT® Test, and multiple measures. Student placement is based on these systemwide placement standards. Each placement determines a student's math and English fall level.
Math Placement Status
- FULFILLED: Satisfied the CSU General Education mathematics/Quantitative Reasoning requirement
- READY: Student is eligible to enroll in college level math
- READY W/SUPPORT: Student is College Level Math with supported instruction
- READY W/SUPPORT *EARLY START REQUIRED: Student is College Level Math with supported instruction
English Placement Status
- FULFILLED: Satisfied the CSU General Education English Composition requirement
- READY: Student is eligible to enroll in College Level English
- READY W/SUPPORT: Student is eligible to Enroll in Stretch English Course
- READY W/SUPPORT *EARLY START REQUIRED: Student is eligible to Enroll in Stretch English Course
"Ready w/Support *Early Start Required" students are required to participate in the Early Start Program, all other placement statuses are not required to participate in the Early Start Program. Students who require support in both math and English will only be required to focus on one of those disciplines during the Early Start Program. Students required to participate in the Early Start Program will receive communications with placement, next steps, and registration instructions.
