Coursework or Coursework/Exam Verification
This subject matter option is an evaluation of courses previously taken or a combination of coursework and exams previously taken to verify if the subject matter domain being sought is met.
Courses must be nonremedial, passed with a grade of C- or better, pass or credit is also acceptable. AP exams can be used for coursework, but the AP exam must be credited on your college transcript.
You will need to attach catalog descriptions for each course you list under a domain.
Exams must show passage of the appropriate CSET subtest for the subject matter being sought.
To submit your coursework verification request, click the link for the subject matter area you are seeking. You will be taken to the Kuali platform where you can sign in with your CSUB net id and password.
On the form enter your name, CSUB ID, and CSUB Email. Select which credential program you are applying to, the campus you are attending, and if you have passed any of the CSET exams. If yes, which ones. For now, you can skip the attachment field as we will circle back to those.
Select which domains you would like evaluation for. Only check subtests that have not been passed via examination, if you previously took CSETs for the subject matter being sought.
In the coursework area of the domain, list any courses that you previously took that you feel would meet the domain.
For example, in this social science coursework verification request, for the Social Science subtest 1, Domain 1 is World History. You will list any courses that you have taken that cover world history. The second part of this subtest is Domain 6 which is Principles of Geography. You will list any courses that you have that cover geography.
Remember a course must have a grade to be evaluated, so no in progress courses.
After entering all the courses you wish to have evaluated then you will need to attach catalog descriptions for each course you listed.
Catalog descriptions are available from the institution you took the course from. You can also go to cso.collegesource.com to enter your institution and check for catalog descriptions.
You can print, screenshot, or copy and paste the catalog description into a word document then attach the document to the form.
Dont forget to attach your unofficial transcripts and any examination results you may have.
After attaching your documentation, click the blue submit button at the top of the form to submit your coursework verification request.
You will receive an email with your evaluation results once your request is processed. Processing times are on the SMC webpage.
All domains of a subtest must be met to have met the subtest, and all subtests must be met to have met subject matter.
If your evaluation indicated that a domain or subtest is not met, it is ok. You can either take coursework or the appropriate CSET subtest to meet the domain areas and then resubmit for evaluation.
