Pre-College Advisor


  • Promote access to higher education by providing basic information concerning admission requirements, EOP, financial aid programs, student services programs, academic programs and other related information specific to CSU campuses.
  • Assist in the distribution of project applications, flyers and brochures to recruit high school students into the program.
  • Provide school administrators, parents, counselors and other staff with information regarding CSU College Corps mission and objectives.
  • Assist in the conducting of recruitment sessions at Parent/Teacher Association meetings, open houses and college nights to inform all parents of project goals, objectives, services and eligibility requirements.
  • Travel to local area schools as assigned.
  • Sign in and out at each school site when arriving for scheduled advising times.
  • Provide one-on-one advising to high school students.
  • Facilitate small group and individual discussions using CSU College Corps lesson plans and materials.
  • Assist students in establishing an academic planner on CSU Mentor.
  • Attend college admissions and advisory training in the following areas:
    • College admission requirements
    • Admission application procedures
    • Financial aid application process
    • A-G course requirements required for eligibility for CSU admission
      1. Courses required
      2. The grades students must earn
      3. Admission and placement tests needed
      4. Level of proficiency students must achieve in English and mathematics to earn admission to the CSU.
  • Provide workshops and services which include but are not limited to:
    • Academic Advising
    • Transcripts
    • College admissions awareness
    • Financial aid awareness
    • Adjustment to high school
    • Preparation for California Standards Test or other standardized test preparation
    • Study and test taking skills
    • PSAT/SAT information and preparation
    • Assistance with College admissions and financial aid applications
  • Maintain up to date student record keeping and submit to CSU College Corps Coordinator.
  • Register for General Studies two-unit course which provides weekly contact with coordinator and ongoing training.
  • Attend class regularly and complete required assignments by deadline provided.
  • Complete background check and TB testing before beginning advising on high school campuses.
  • Sign 30 Day Trial Policy and Write-Up Policy agreements.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.


  • Preferably students interested in exploring a career in teaching, school counseling, or higher education. 
  • Be willing to commit between 10 and 20 hours per week in advising high school students. 
  • Be willing to make a minimum academic year commitment to the program.
  • Be available to be placed in a high school between the preferred hours of 7:30am – 3:00pm.
  • Be able to satisfy Tuberculosis and Live Scan Fingerprinting test requirements.  
  • Be able to learn appropriate advising techniques.
  • Attend mandatory training workshops.
  • Dress professionally and project a professional demeanor. 
  • Be respectful of the school site policies and procedures. 
  • Be responsible and work well under minimal supervision. 
  • Be punctual for advising sessions and enthusiastic about the objectives of the CCC Program.
  • Register for the General Studies course.
