Academic Programs in Art
ACADEMIC PROGRAMS WITHIN THE DEPARTMENT OF ART AND ART HISTORY
Students pursuing a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in Art may choose a concentration in Studio Art, Art History, or Art Education. The Art Education concentration fulfills the Waiver Requirements of the California Commission for Teacher Credentialing (CTCC) for the Single Subject Program in Art. The department also offers a minor in Art, Studio Art, or Art History.
Requirements for the Bachelor of Arts Degree in Art
In addition to the University's General Education requirements, students majoring in Art must complete one of the following major emphases: Studio Art, Art Education, or Art History. The requirements for these emphases are listed below.
Requirements for a Major in Art with an Emphasis in Studio Art (54 units).
Please take 2000 level prior to 3000 level prior to 4000 level, as outlined below:
1. Lower Division (18 units): ART 2200, 2210 or 2220, 2300, 2400, 2508, 2608
2. Upper Division (36 units): ART 3000, 3620, 3630, three courses from ART 3200-3410, 4000, three courses from ART 4200-4400 (may be repeated for credit), ART 4010 or 4020, ART 4040 and 4058.
Requirements for a Major in Art with an Emphasis in Art Education (60 units).
This degree emphasis fulfills most of the Waiver Requirements of the California Commission for Teacher Credentialing (CTCC) for the Single Subject Program in Art. Please take 2000 level prior to 3000 level prior to 4000 level, as outlined below:
1. Lower Division (21 units): ART 2200, 2210, 2220, 2300, 2400, 2508, 2608
2. Upper Division (39 units): ART 3100, 3200, 3210, 3220, 3230, 3310, 3620, 4040, 4058, 4010 (or 4020), 4030, 4100, one additional course from ART 3300-3410, and one additional course from ART 4200 - 4400.
Note: Students seeking to prepare for teaching careers in K-12 Art programs should consult with Dr. Dianne Turner, Professor of Art Education.
Requirements for a Major in Art with an Emphasis in Art History (51 units).
Please take 2000 level prior to 3000 level prior to 4000 level, as outlined below:
1. Lower Division (18 units): ART 2200, 2210 (or 2220), 2300, 2400, 2508, 2508
2. Upper Division (33 units): ART 3600, 3620, 3630, 3648, 3650, 3660, 3670*, 4000, 4010, 4710, and 4900.
*pending university approval. An additional section of ART 4710 may be substituted for Art 3670.
Requirements for the Minor in Art
For a Minor in Art, students must take four three-unit art courses, at least two of which must be upper division.
Requirements for the Minor in Studio Art
For a Minor in Studio Art, students must take four three-unit courses, at least two of which must be upper division, selected from the following: ART 2200, 2210, 2220, 2300, 2400, 2508, 2608, 3200-3400, 4100-4400, or 4700.
Requirements for the Minor in Art History
For a Minor in Art History, students must take ART2508 and 2608, and two upper-division courses selected from the following: ART 3600, 3620, 3630, 3648, 3650, 3660, 3670, 4000, and 4710.
