2019 Alumni Rising Runner: Christopher Gutierrez

Christopher Gutierrez

Christopher Gutierrez was chosen by the School of Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Engineering. His nomination was submitted by the Computer and Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department.

As a student at CSUB, he was a scholar of the McNair, Marc U*Star and LSAMP programs. His work at CSUB set him on a path toward graduate school, specifically on a cyber-security research career path.

After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in computer science from CSUB, Gutierrez went on to receive a master’s from CSU Northridge and a Ph. D from Purdue University. At Purdue, he was co-advised by Eugene Spafford, one of the eminent names in cyber security and computer sciences.

Gutierrez currently works as a security solutions research scientist in Intel Lab’s research division, has more than a dozen publications to his name, including first author for multiple scholarly papers in Association for Computing Machinery and Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers journals.

Gutierrez continues to correspond with former professors and classmates regarding research projects they began during his studies at CSUB.

RISING RUNNER

Each year, CSUB's four academic schools choose "Rising Runners," university graduates of the last 10 years already making a mark in their careers. The Alumni Association invites them back to campus during Homecoming week to be honored and to share words of wisdom with current students.

The other three Rising Runners are:

School of Arts and Humanities: Kimberly Jackson

School of Business and Public Administration: Neeraj Rama

School of Social Sciences and Education: Rachel Tate
