What is Summer Bridge?

Summer Bridge is an intensive four-week residential program of comprehensive skill-building and orientation for approximately 150 students who are new to California State University, Bakersfield. The program is for students accepted to CSUB for the fall of 1998 who demonstrate the need to improve their skills in English and mathematics. Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) students must follow EOP guidelines in attending the Summer Bridge Program, and all special admit students are required to attend.
 Purpose of the Program...
The purpose of the Summer Bridge Program is to provide an intensive orientation program for entering freshmen and transfer students who are not fully prepared to meet the demands of college instruction and to prepare them for the transition to university life. Our goal is to generate in our participants the skills and motivation necessary for success in completing a baccalaureate degree.
What will I do in the program?
Summer Bridge participants will live on campus for four learning-intensive weeks. Students will attend math, English, study skills, orientation, and critical thinking classes which last all morning and into the afternoon. Activities, financial aid counseling, academic advising, tutoring, and housing arrangements are also afternoon activities. Students will earn their first university units (a.k.a. credits, hours), meet the staff and faculty of the campus, and meet and work with new friends and future classmates. Additionally, there are field trips, sporting events, extra-curricular activities, health services, and guest speakers. All of these--including meals, housing, transportation to events, and school supplies--are expense-free to participants.
 Who will assist your student?
Professional and para-professional staff who are experienced in working with and providing support services to a wide variety of students throughout the academic year; instructors who teach at CSUB and area schools who have a proven commitment to working with students of diverse educational and cultural backgrounds; resident assistants who are experienced, trained graduates and students of CSUB who have an interest in helping other students to successfully make the transition from high school or community college to university life; these make up the experienced staff of the Summer Bridge Program.
