GUIDELINES: MIDI-LENGTH PROJECT
Your midi-length project is based on the information covered in chapters 1, 2, 3, and 4. Therefore, the project deals with population distribution and composition, measuring accessibility, geographic association, life tables, age specific fertility rates, economic participation rates, and migration. For this first project, you have to calculate the following measures for Phoenix and for the state of Arizona. For each measure, you will have to make comparisons Between Phoenix and the state of Arizona.
Have fun!
population centroid;
sex ratios;
dependency ratios - total, youth, and elderly;
median age;
construct a population pyramid for both areas;
establish whether there is or is not a geographic association between median household income and Spanish origin for any census areas in Phoenix;
life tables - (eg. male and female; or Hispanic and white - you may select two of your choice - they must be for the same area, however);
ASFR - for whites, blacks, Spanish origin for Arizona;
age-specific death rates for Phoenix;
IMR;
LFPR, UR, EPR for Phoenix;
The challenge is to identify the data that you will need to calculate these measures and then to find the source that will give you this data.
