Exercises 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 15 - pp. 88-89.
I strongly recommend that you review natural logarithms from any introductory mathematics text. It is useful to know this while understanding and solving problems related to population projections. I also recommend that you create a spreadsheet to help you calculate the various measures needed to construct a life table. Please make sure that you demonstrate your familiarity with life table calculations by showing me how you calculated certain key measures.
Exercises 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8 - pp. 124-125.
I strongly recommend you review the section on matrices from any mathematics or algebra text. The concepts of matrix algebra are widely used in demography. The homework will take you some time to complete but doing all the exercises will help you sharpen your methodological skills. Again, remember to show your work in order to receive full credit. Of course, feel free to use a spreadsheet program if you like.
Exercises 1, 4, 7, 8 - pp. 151-152
Exercises 1, 2, 4, 5 - pp. 184-185
These exercises are difficult and time consuming but they merely extend the ideas that were presented in previous chapters.
Exercises 2, 3, 6, 7 - pp. 271-273
Exercises 1, 2, 8 - pp. 335-336
I strongly recommend that you review the sections on cluster analysis and factor analysis from any advanced statistics text. These are great methods to know.
