A Statement From Galen of Pergamum
129-about 200AD
I am not unaware
that I shall achieve nothing at all or very little. For I find that a great many things which have been conclusively
demonstrated by ancient authorities are unintelligible to most individuals
today because of their ignorance---and because they are too lazy to learn. Even when they do understand they may
not give an impartial account.
The fact is that he
who wishes to know more than the multitude must far surpass all others as
regards his nature and early training.
When he reaches early adolescence, he must become possessed with an
ardent love for truth---like one inspired. He must spend night and day learning thoroughly all
that has been said by the most illustrious ancient authorities. Having learned all this, he must spend
a prolonged period testing ---observing what agrees with the ancient
authorities and what does not---accepting one and rejecting the other. To such individuals my hope is that my
treatise will prove of the very greatest assistance.
Yet such people may
be few in number. For the others
this book will be as superfluous as a tale told to an ass.
Violence is the last resort
of the incompetent----Quote from Isaac Asimov
Does hope lend strength or
does it weaken a man?-----Quote from Alexander Solzenitzen
