Materials required:  ¿Sabías que…? (Fourth Edition) by Van Patten, Lee and Ballman
We will cover chapters 13 to 18. You can go to the Library, check out the book and make copies.
Students should have a Spanish-English, English-Spanish dictionary.

You will need to prepare the exercises from the website: http://www.mhhe.com/sabiasque5 (you do not have to turn these in).
A selection of grammar exercises and listenings from the workbook are available at the main website of the course, so you will not need to buy the workbook. The audio is online at http://www.mhhe.com/sabiasque5 (go to the Audio Program section). You have to turn in the workbook exercises the day of the exam. The ones from the website are for you to review.
We will watch some movies during the class time. (Some of them will be available at WebCT: http://webct.csub.edu/webct/public/home.pl).

LAST DAY OF CLASSES

FINAL EXAM: Your instructor will tell you the day. Assignment: HISPANIC PEOPLE IN OUR COMMUNITY
a) Movies (choose: Real women have curves / Bread and roses. Write a composition (200-250 words): tell the story using past tenses, stressing the main problems addressed in the movie you have chosen.
b) Reading about Argentina.

ORAL PRESENTATIONS-10% of the grade: you will need to prepare at least 10 slides related to a Hispanic country that you would like to visit, or you will visit. Use conditional or future tenses. Limit the writing on each slide to the minimum, and do the explanation verbally.
 

EXTRA CREDIT: WILL COUNT 5%. YOUR INSTRUCTOR WILL PUT IT ONLINE.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
Language course designed for students who have successfully completed their first and second levels of Spanish. This course aims to improve the student's ability to speak, read, and write in Spanish, to systematically review grammar previously studied, to master new concepts in Spanish, and to enhance the student's knowledge of the cultural diversity of the Spanish-speaking world.

GENERAL EDUCATION AND SPANISH PROGRAM OBJECTIVES THAT APPLY TO THIS COURSE

The following goals are a necessary part of this course:

Goal 1. To communicate effectively in Spanish, both orally and in writing, and to think independently in a logical and rational manner.

Objectives Students will be able to perform at an appropriate ACTFL level in speaking, listening and writing.
 Students will be able to express ideas lucidly through frequent written assignments, including, grammar, translation and interpretation exercises, and compositions.

Assessment Students will have three in-class tests. Each test is worth 20%. No make-up test will be given if you are absent on a test day. However, subsequent test will count double. If the subsequent test is also missed, the previously missed test is then counted as an F. Students will have a final exam that will be 15% of the grade. By the end of the term you will have also an oral presentation. That will be a 10% of total grade.

 Homework assignments (writing and listening) will be a 15%. You will have to hand the workbook homework to your teacher on the chapters exam day for evaluation. She will pay especial attention to the compositions in it, but you should check the answers to the rest of exercises; they are located at the end of the workbook. This will be an excellent review for your exam.

Goal 2. To acquire appropiate cultural awareness and understanding.

Objective Identify, describe and explain the culture of Spain and Latin America and compare it or contrast it with other cultures and the own culture.

Assessment Each chapter of the book explains a little about a Hispanic culture. You will watch short videos about it, and also some movies. You will have to write short compositions about those movies. Each will count 20 or 25 points in your exams.
 

Goal 3. Understand the experiences and ideas of others and the interaction between culture and creative expression.

Objectives Explain the effect of gender, ethnicity and social class on experience, expression and/or creative production.
 Describe the experiences of a culture different from their own.
 Explain de differences and similarities between experiences across cultures and communities.
 Describe personal assumptions about the human experience underlying one’s own creative works.
 Discuss and explain how the expression of ideas and creative expressions are affected by their culture.

Assessment Attendance and participation in class, expressing your ideas or experiences about your culture and others (in Spanish), according to what you will learn form the book, listenings, videos… That will be a 5% of your final grade. A respectful behavior towards your professor and class mates is also expected.
 

Goal 4 Understand one’s own culture and community

Objectives We will describe and discuss peculiarities of our own community, especially the Spanish heritage we have and the presence of Hispanic people in it.

Assessment We will have a composition about two movies and a reading to work with in the final exam.
 This will be a 10% of your total grade.

So, a student's grade will depend on the following factors:
  3 Exams    20% each
  Final exam   10%
  Oral presentation    10%
  Classroom participation, behavior    5%
  Homework                    15%

Extra credit     5%

Attendance note:  Six (6) unexcused absences will result in an “F” for the course.
You are responsible for all work covered and assigned, regardless of your ability to attend class.
This syllabus is subject to change to meet the needs of the class. Any such change will be announced.  Students are invited and encouraged to contact the instructor for assistance during regular office hours whenever they feel it desirable or necessary. If you cannot come at those hours, send me an e-mail and we will do it by appointment.
Our Language Laboratory is located in E102. Your instructor will tell you the times when it will be open. You can prepare your homework there, watch videos in Spanish, or work with the Atajo program to write your compositions.
NOTE: NO BEPERS OR CELL PHONES ARE TO BE TURNED ON DURING CLASS.
