Curriculum Vitae

Background:
I received my B.A. in Study of Religion (pre-med) from UCLA in 1979. I attended a masters program at San Diego State University before moving to the University of Minnesota, where I received my Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology in 1991. In 1992, I completed a postdoctoral fellowship in pain research through the Department of Psychiatry at the University of California at San Diego. I worked as a clinical psychologist for HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital before joining the faculty of CSUB in 1995.

Interests:
I am a clinical psychologist with interests in quality of life. In one line of research, I study balance as a life-organizing principle contributing to quality of life. In other work, I investigate psychological barriers preventing fortunate Americans from helping the world's poorest people. I currently teach introductory psychology and graduate clinical courses in the Counseling Psychology MS program. In the past, I have taught abnormal psychology, health psychology, positive psychology and research methods.

A Favorite Quote:
To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you lived. This is to have succeeded. -- attributed to Ralph Waldo Emerson
