English/linguistics 318: History of the English Language (5) Development of English orthography, phonology, morphology, syntax and lexis from the Old English period to the present, including both internal and external influences.

English/linguistics 319: Structure of English(5) Examination of modern English phonology, morphology, and syntax. Includes relationship between spelling and pronunciation, and dialects.

English/linguistics 319(a) : Structure of English(3) An introduction to the fundamental concepts in phonology and morphology including phonemes, morphemes, and word classes.

English/linguistics 319(b) : Structure of English(3) An introduction to the fundamental concepts in syntax including phrases and clauses and their functions in sentences.

English/linguistics 411: Writing in a Second Language (5) An examination of second language writing as both a process and a product. Considerable emphasis will be placed on grammatical errors in writing and how to teach students to edit their own writing within the process of writing.

English/linguistics 414: History of the English Language(5) Development of English orthography, phonology, morphology, syntax and lexis from the Old English period to the present, including both internal and external influences.

English/linguistics 415: Introduction to Linguistics(5) Basic concepts and issues in the study of language, including the structure of language, language acquisition, bilinguialism, and language variation.

English/linguistics 416: Phonology(5) Analysis of the sound system of a variety of languages within the framework of generative phonological theory.

English/linguistics 417: Syntax(5) Introduction to the syntax of English and other languages within the framework of generative syntactic theory.

English/linguistics 418: Second Language Acquistion(5) Examination of some of the major theories of second language acquisition, including the monitor model, interlanguage, and acculturation/pidginization.

English/linguistics 419: Interlanguage(5) An examination of the grammars of second language learners as independent, yet sytematic, language systems.

English/linguistics 420: Sociolinguistics: Language, Society and Education(5) Examination of the relationship between language and such variables as gender, economic class, race, and ethnicity. Topics include social dialects, code-switching and the educational problems of language minorities.

Spanish 409: Advanced Spanish Syntax(5) A course in written and verbal stylistics, with emphasis on Spanish syntax.

Spanish 412: Spanish Linguistics (5) Introduction to phonology, morphology and syntax, as well as historical and sociolinguistic aspects of the Spanish language.

Spanish 413: Constrastive Structures of Spanish and English (5) An analysis of the phonology, morphology, and syntax of Spanish leading to a contrastive examination of Spanish and English.

Spanish 420: Southwest Spanish(5) An in-depth view of the linguistic, cultural, and psychological aspects of the Spanish dialet(s) spoken in the Southwestern U.S.
