PEAK  430 Women in Sport

This course will be comprised of readings and discussion from the textbook, Women in Sport, Ed. Greta Cohen, video presentations in class and student presentations of women who made historical contributions the women’s sports movement. Students are required to participate in class discussions, present a brief oral report on one sportswoman, and complete a 3 to 5 page essay on a topic from a list of topics presented in class.  The essay should be written in the style that could be used for publication in the Reader’s Digest, First Person Story, or a newspaper human-interest story.

Course Objectives

Objectives for PE 430, Women in Sport

 

 

  1.  Be conversant with the following:

1)     History and concepts of feminism as they apply to the women’s sports movement;

2)     Major pieces of pertinent legislation; and,

3)     The issues and controversies surrounding the women’s sports movement.

 

  1. Practice writing and speaking about the issues related to a feminist analysis of

sport in contemporary society.

 

  1. Be part of a socially safe and open classroom where there is room for various  

      opinions and where the value of each person is respected regardless of the opinion

      held.  Students will be asked to voice their opinions in a thoughtful and caring

      manner with all due respect to classmates and the instructor.

Introduction: Prepare the first 3 Chapters

Assignment: select topic for your essay.  Make a tentative outline of your paper or other notes that could be used for writing the paper.

Oral reports will be given during the third week of classes unless a student elects to present on earlier.  The length will be 10 to 12 minutes and use of power point or some other form of visual/audio aide is encouraged.

 

Grades will be based upon the oral report, the essay, attendance, and occasional quizzes on the readings.  All are equally weighted.
