Assignment: After you have completed reading Remarque’s novel, write a one-page essay on one of the two following topics:

  1. Imagine you are a soldier who fought against the Germans in the Great War (WWI). It is now 1930 and you just finished reading All Quiet on the Western Front. You decide to write a one-page letter to Remarque describing your reaction to the book. Do not try to describe the book; write to him of your reactions to his book. Be specific.
  2. Write a one-page essay explaining in what ways All Quiet on the Western Front is a useful source for teaching the history of the Great War. Do not try to summarize the book; focus on the aspects of the text that you think will help students to understand the war more deeply. Be specific.

Format: Your essay should be one page in length, typed (on a computer), single-spaced, using the 12 point Times font, with one inch margins all round. In the upper right corner of the page write the course number, your section, your name, the date, and the topic you are writing on.
