Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation
The Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) Program is a project sponsored by the National Science Foundation and the California State University. Its goal is to broaden participation in Science, Math, Engineering and Technology (SMET) disciplines and contribute to the national agenda to increase the number of underrepresented minorities receiving baccalaureate degrees in STEM disciplines. To be eligible, a student must be an individual who has faced or faces social, cultural, educational, or economic barriers to careers in STEM. CSUB-LSAMP consists of two main components: Summer Bridge and Academic Workshops. 2008 SUMMER BRIDGE Participants attend the CSUB campus for four weeks to study mathematics and science, and to get acquainted with campus life. They receive a stipend that ranges between $400 and $800 (depending on performance), a graphing calculator, and tutoring in SMET, which might prove invaluable later during their college studies. The dates and hours for the 2008 LSAMP Summer Program are June 23 - July 18, Monday - Friday 9:30-noon, and Monday - Thursday 1-3:30 in the afternoon. ACADEMIC WORKSHOPS These are mandatory-attendance workshops for CSUB students supporting lower-division courses in Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics. They are offered every quarter at CSUB. At CSUB the supported courses are: Descriptions of these courses are in the CSUB catalog. BC students should contact the MESA program for information about supporting lower-division courses. LSAMP RESEARCH COMPONENT AT BC OR CSUB The purpose of the LSAMP Research Component (RC) is to prepare minority students in Science, Mathematics, Engineering, or Technology (SMET) research areas so that students (a) understand the research process, and (b) become ready for extramural summer research internships leading to graduate school.
