If you are planning to study science, engineering, or mathematics at Bakersfield College or California State University, Bakersfield, you may benefit from the Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) Program. It includes a four-week long paid summer workshop and two successive academic years of full-time study with concurrent academic year workshops.
The stipend for participating in the summer workshop ranges between $400 and $800 (depending on performance) plus a graphing calculator. An additional stipend of up to $900 is paid as incentive awards for successfully completing mathematics, biology, chemistry, computer science, or physics classes and enrolling in the corresponding academic-year workshops.
The dates of this year's summer workshop are June 26 to July 21, 2006 (except July 3 & 4). Mathematics will be emphasized allowing you to brush up on what you already know and prepare you for the science courses you will be taking in college. Students must attend campus 9:30 – 3:30 with one hour for lunch Monday-Thursday and on Fridays 9:30-12. There will be field trips to the California Science Museum, the Facility for Animal Care and Treatment and to the CSUB Observatory. More details later. The workshop is organized at the same time than CAMP and Summer Bridge Programs. If you have been accepted to any of those programs you can still participate in their activities and in addition benefit from the LSAMP program.
To be selected (a) your ethnicity must be one of the following: Hispanic-American, African-American, American-Indian or Pacific Islander; (b) you must be ready for pre-calculus or calculus courses and have passed the English Placement and Entry Level Mathematics tests (or received waivers) if you plan to attend CSUB. If you have not taken these tests yet, they will be administered several times during the Spring Quarter 2006 at the CSUB campus. Information about these and the Calculus Readiness test is included in this package. In addition, (c) a letter of recommendation from a math/science teacher is required. We will also need (d) your high school or college transcripts (whatever applies).
Please submit the enclosed application as soon as you can. Notification as to your acceptance will be mailed to you by June 16, 2006 or earlier. If you need more information, please feel free to call me at (661) 654-2031 or email me at jtrigos@csub.edu.
I hope to see you this summer, ![]() Dr. Javier Trigos Professor of Mathematics AMP Coordinator |
