LSAMP RESEARCH COMPONENT AT BC OR CSUB The purpose of the LSAMP Research Component (RC) is to prepare CSUB-LSAMP students to (a) understand the research process, and (b) become ready for extramural summer research internships leading to graduate school. Students who have completed the preparatory LSAMP courses and have chosen a major in SMET are eligible for the SC. Students will enroll in an independent study class and will work closely with an advisor for an equivalent of at least 27x4=108 hours spread during one of the Fall, Winter, Spring, or Summer quarters or semesters of 2006-07. After this, the student must continue to work closely with the advisor during the senior year so that s/he prepares her/himself for and succeeds in graduate school. To apply, students must contact a SMET advisor. Together they must write a one-page essay describing the activity to be carried on. The advisor will be responsible for filling out the necessary paper work to enroll the student in an independent study class. Students who satisfactorily complete all course requirements will be paid $600 at the end of the quarter. Naturally, the role of the advisors is extremely important. SMET faculty decide whether or not a particular student is eligible for support. They have the prerogative to cancel the component at any time. The advisor can set up a lecture format or let the student work by her/himself. For more information, please contact: Professor
