SCIENCE 111 -- Introduction to Physics (4 Units) Syllabus Fall 2007 Instructor: Dr. Jorge Talamantes Science II, room 275 phone: 654.2335 fax: 654.2040 Office hours: See http://www.csub.edu/~jtalamantes Meeting times: MW 11-12:30 (Science 179) plus one lab section to be chosen from: section 2 -- T 1-3:30 (Science 283) section 3 -- T 3:30-6 (Science 283) RECOMMENDED BUT NOT REQUIRED: Conceptual Physical Science 3/e by Hewitt, Suchocki, and Hewitt Addison Wesley (2003). Reading materials are on Reserve in the library. Also, they are posted on electronic reserve. Catalog Description: Introduction to various fundamental principles of physics. Topics to be covered include classical mechanics, thermodynamics, electricity and magnetism, waves, and basic astronomical concepts. Laboratory exercises will be assigned to complement lecture materials. Three hours lecture and three hours lab. Prerequisites: Satisfaction of the Entry Level Mathematics requirement; Mathematics 221 recommended. Open only to majors in Liberal Studies or Child, Adolescent and Family Studies. This class focuses on the actual scientific skills required by the Science Content Standards for California Public Schools K-12 (California State Board of Education). We will address those standards that relate to physics. Our primary goals are a) that the student truly understand the nature of science, how it works, and what constitutes scientific evidence and how it is gathered, and b) that the student understand the science in the Standards. We will not specifically address how to teach this content to K-12 students. Note that this is a university-level class. Students will be expected to develop a level of proficiency in science well beyond K-12 level. Reading: The assigned reading (see the Lecture Schedule) is absolutely required. Exams: There will be three exams (see the Lecture Schedule). Final: This exam will be comprehensive. Labs: No lab manual is required. Lab instructions will be provided (through WebCT). These instructions must be read in advance. There will be no make-up labs. See Laboratory Schedule. Attendance to the laboratory will be checked. Attendance: Lecture attendance will not be checked, but it is required and definitely not optional. Dates to keep| 09/28/07 - last day to withdraw without a "W". in mind: | 10/26/07 - last day to withdraw for serious and compelling reason. | 11/26/07 - Final exam: 11:00 AM - 1:30 PM. Final grade | Exams (15% each): 45% determination| Chapter quizzes (WebCT): 25% | Final: 15% | Laboratory: 15% This class is not graded on a curve. The following relation will be used for assigning a final grade: 86-100% A 76-85% B 60-75% C 51-59% D 00-50% F Behavior: No horse play, or eating, or drinking is allowed in the laboratory.
