CSUB Guitar Day Guitar Orchestra

The highlight of this massive day of guitar will likely be the CSUB Guitar Day Orchestra. This gaggle of 50+ guitarists will rehearse twice during Guitar Day - working up three pieces for performance at the afternoon recital.

This ensemble will consist of CSUB faculty, students and any and all CSUB Guitar Day attendees.

This has the potential to be a real show stopper!
Notes for Guitar Program Directors:

The music for this Guitar Day is decidedly more challenging than the music last year. We urge your students to download this music soon and begin working on the pieces. The most accessible of the pieces is Bondens Sang, by Grieg. The Vals (Grieg) and Gymnopedie (Satie) are similar in difficulty thought the Satie requires more subtlety.

The
Three Chilean Pieces by Carlos Perez will take some work, particularly the rhythmic realm. But, the pieces are very rewarding. Maestro Perez is scheduled to work on these pieces with us at Guitar day - so be prepared to work on these even if they are not necessarily performance ready by December 1.

Notes on the Satie/Debussy:

1) This is a guitar arrangement of the Debussy orchestration of the famous Satie piano piece. Most of you will know this piece as Gymnopedie I. The works were originally published in a different order than we now know of, thus the discrepancy.

2) Notice guitars 1 and 2 share a staff and are playing the melody together; one guitar in harmonics, the other not.

3) I have had success splitting the 4th part among 2 players. There are some moderately awkward stretches created by the scordatura. When I do this, I require both players to be able to play both parts on demand.

General Information

All activities are FREE and open to the public - up to our 90 seat threshold.

Parking on the CSUB campus is FREE for the day - Parking Lots B and C are adjacent to the Music Building. Visitors should enter campus by traveling WEST on Stockdale Highway and turning SOUTH onto Don Hart Drive West.

Attendees should bring a brown bag lunch. There are also soda machines and vending machines near the Music Building.

A Fender Blues Deluxe Amplifier (and a 1/4 inch cable) (1x12) will be available for jazz guitarists to use for the Master Class or the recital.

Important Information

Attendees will need to audition to earn one of four lessons in the Master Classes. The students with the strongest auditions will be invited to perform in the afternoon recital as a soloist.

Deadline for the audition is November 19, 2012.

Audition Requirements

Prepare 5 to 10 minutes of music. There are no limitations to style or genre, but be prepared to show Mr. Scully and Mr. Cope music that allows you to play at your best. We just want to see you shine!

Contact Jim Scully (661.654.2511 or
jscully@csub.edu) to schedule an audition for consideration for a masterclass or for a spot on the recital.

**If an in-person audition is impossible to coordinate with Mr. Scully and/or Mr. Cope auditions may be submitted via a YouTube link in an email to jscully@csub.edu no later than November 19, 2012.

Be sure to put "
CSUB GUITAR DAY AUDITION" in the subject field and include your name and phone number in the body of the email

Any student guitarist is welcome to attend any or all of the activities at CSUB Guitar Day, but they will need to “
