CSUB Jazz Coffeehouse Concerts

There is a rich tradition of live jazz performance at CSU Bakersfield. With award-winning big bands and small combos, the Legends of Jazz Concert Series, the Emerging Jazz Artist Series and the Bakersfield Jazz Festival live jazz is a huge part of the cultural fabric of CSUB and our local community.

An important part of that culture is the Jazz Coffeehouse Concert Series.

The Jazz Coffeehouse Concert Series is a three-concert series during the academic year that features small ensembles of student-musicians with an interest in jazz and improvised music.

NYC Trio - Hans Blix Band - May 2008

Andrew Durkin and his Industrial Jazz Group - April 2009

These events commonly feature the music of luminaries from the tradition of jazz - Miles Davis, Horace Silver, John Coltrane, Wes Montgomery, Charles Mingus, Thelonious Monk and others.

But, the repertoire is not limited to the royalty of jazz. Part of the rich tradition of jazz at CSUB is the focus on original compositions. Between 10-15 original compositions are premiered at the Jazz Coffeehouse concerts each year - and these new works tend to inspire the most exciting performances from our student-musicians.
