Guidelines for writing History papers

HISTORY

The definition of this discipline is often debated.  In its simplest form, history is a record, description, or interpretation of past human events.

Historians use a wide variety of resources in order to study the past.  Usually the type of resources used depends upon the question being examined.

Examples of primary literature include photographs, oral histories, and objects such as furniture clothing, tools, architecture, tombs, etc. Written materials include diaries, letters, account books, minutes of meetings, official records, newspapers, and magazines.

Major Indexes & Databases: Historical Abstracts, America: History and Life, C.R.I.S.: The Combined Retrospective Index Set to Journals in History, 1838-1974. There are many other useful research tools for this field depending upon the research question. Be sure to ask a librarian for assistance.
